After 9/11 I kept getting called a terrorist. After 9/11, I have had ‘random screenings’ at airports. After 9/11 I have had people jokingly ask me if I am hiding a grenade or guns under my headscarf. After 9/11 I kept getting asked whether I celebrated the day it happened. And I am not alone when it comes to these experiences. I was one years old when this tragedy took place yet for 18 years after the tragedy I’m still being treated as if I somehow had something to do with it or celebrated that day. And you know what? I live in the Netherlands. And if post 9/11 things are like that here, it does not bear thinking about the situation in the USA right now. Innocent lives were lost the day 9/11 happened and we should never forget that but we should also not forget the millions of innocent civilians killed in the ‘war against terrorism’. We should not forget the countless muslims who were harassed and murdered in the days after 9/11 and the muslims who are still suffering because America decided all muslims needed to answer for the actions of like 5 terrorists with our lives.
